Approximately 1 in 88 children have been identified with an In our household, it's 2 in 2. Our daughter, Sofia, and son, Grayson, are both on the Autism Spectrum. For Sofia, it means debilitating anxiety, and for Grayson, it means oral-motor and speech issues. Both are stim seekers, have issues with motor planning and fine motor skills, do not handle change and transitions well, and have echolalia in varying degrees. We can never sing the "Happy Birthday" song at Sofia's birthday parties because the song is an auditory nightmare for her, and Grayson, though improving with therapy, has trouble chewing his food and forming words. Yet both are the most amazing children we have ever had the privilege of knowing. They are the ultimate loves of our lives. They attack each day like titans. They are wildly charismatic, funny to the nth degree, outsmart us in every conversation, have memories like steel traps, are highly intelligent, are as beautiful as the day is long, and want so badly, though sometimes it is not instinctual to them, to be a big part of society and the world in which they live. Autism Awareness is pivotal. With the growing number of children on the spectrum, it is so imperative that the world understand what autism means...especially before they speak. |
